Cats with Hyperthyroidism

Help!!!  My 14 year old cat was recently diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism.  She had a T-score of 14 (not great) and is on her first 2 weeks of medication before another round of blood and urine tests.  I understand she could be a candidate for a radio-iodine treatment (the thyroid is radiated), and many cats are just fine after that.

Anyone who has gone through this…please give me your experience.  I do also understand that the hyperthyroidism could be masking renal problems.

What to do?…

  • If it were my kitty I would do radio iodine treatment. Mine is 19 years old has been taking methmizole and is down to about 3 pounds. Not an option for him, but if you have good renal scores at the vet I would sure give it a try.

  • Terri, thanks for your response. Happily that is the choice I made and Cassie came through it beautifully! While expensive, I can say that after this year, her old personality has returned, she plays with toys, and she has showed no signs of renal problems.

She is still not wild about 4 year old Bo, but she doesn’t take after him like a wild mama cat protecting her young…now it’s just barely audible grumbles.

I hope the best for your cat. I have a 19 year old as well and know that few medical procedures are for him at his age. I can only love him and make his life a good one until he crosses the rainbow bridge.
